You may have noticed there are new domain extension such as .sydney, .melbourne, .nyc (offshore) and more offer from webcentral, crazydomain, netregistry, or melbourneIT. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been talking about new gTLDs (some people call it nTLD) for years, but there are many internet marketers question how they will affect the search engine factors and internet appearance. Once the search engines (google, bing or yahoo) accept the potential to change the search engine behavior and marketing strategy, and as we know it, understanding and investing to the new gTLDs is important. At this point, today, many of the hot and premium domains are gone such as,,,,, or etc.

Briefly to discover the new domain extension. The new generic top-level domains (gTLD), are “dot-anything” domain extensions that go beyond .com, .net, .org. ICANN accepted applications in the first half of 2012 from large organizations wanting to run new domain extensions, which includes companies such as IBM, Google, Amazon, Audi and YouTube. In all, 1,930 applications for new domain extensions have been filed for various types of extensions, ranging from the truly generic .shop and .club to the brand-specific .bmw and the geo-specific .melbourne, .sydney and .kiwi But there is no .auckland yet.

Under the current system where .com is king, brand marketers and SEO professionals know the value of a good domain name. Whether it is the business’ main site, a targeted sector, or a premium domain name, pithy, descriptive names have the power to make a company stand out in searches, boost its position in organic search results, and establish a reputation as a reliable source of information and a leader in a certain category. According to Search Engine Land that as the domain system expands to include descriptive domain extensions, there are a number of reasons for companies to consider investing in the new areas:

  • Location – If the new gTLDs are adopted, used and accepted among businesses and consumers, they’ll open up new premium names at targeted domain extensions, creating an opportunity for businesses to get in on names they may have had to pay six- or seven-figure sums for as a .com
  • Community – Location-based extensions such as .melbourne, .sydney and others have the potential to act as location tags, helping map websites to their target areas in the physical world and build a community online, or be utilized in mobile search.

Furthermore, according to Amazee Metrics that if you have an established website we do not recommend a domain change for now. If you are currently looking for a domain, you should keep the following in mind:

  • If you have a clear geographic targeting we recommend using a country specific TLD (for example ".ch" for Switzerland). Although geotargeting in Google Webmaster Tools is available for a lot of the new generic TLDs, it can be assumed that country specific TLDs give search engines a strong additional signal.

  • If your website audience is international you can use one of the new generic TLDs. Since it is currently hard to predict how the new TLDs will develop in the future, we recommend to buy – if available – a ".com" domain AND a new TLD. Like this you are well prepared in case future studies may reveal that search engines really favor one option over the other. 

In addition, you can search for a specific domain ( or for entire extensions (.store, .shop, .app, etc.) in , the names of new gTLD in different categories: featured, popular, business, entertainment, faith, geographic, home and family, identity, interest, offbeat, other, professions, real estate, recreation, retail and technology. In conclusion, a name is very important to business, which is same as a domain important to internet marketing. There is one day, apart from 1300phonewords, the new gTLDs pose a rare opportunity for marketers, large enterprises and brands today, but soon will change.
